Try a White Peach Matcha!

We just celebrated Valentine's Day, so that means that Spring is right around the corner, obviously... ;)

Even if the Philly groundhog proves to be right with six more weeks of Winter, we are starting to ring in Spring anyway with a new, fruity, refreshing matcha tea from Harney & Sons. The next time you visit, be sure to try our new White Peach Matcha tea!

And let's all hope the warmer weather is closer than that groundhog thought!

New Raspberry Cream Cheese Pastries!

Nothing says, "Summer!", to me quite like fresh, sweet, juicy raspberries. Those tiny little pink berries are truly my favorite treat!

In honor of the return of Summer, we've brought in a new pastry that features this seasonal classic: Raspberry Cream Cheese Croissants!

Just like they sound, they're a raspberry and cream cheese filling wrapped in a soft, buttery croissant....yum! Stop by and try this new menu item when it's in, and help us celebrate Summer in the sweetest way we can imagine!

Grab & Go Sandwiches Mean No Wait for Lunch!

"Tempus Fugit", but sometimes time flies by just too quickly--especially on a lunch hour.

You've got only 60 minutes for lunch, which means that you don't have a lot of time to wait in line. This is why we have our fresh Grab 'n Go sandwiches available at our store!

Visit us at The Notch Travel Centre and grab a fresh deli sandwich, drink, and chips, all without waiting in the Deli line!

Enjoy your lunch break and don't wait for lunch!

Introducing Our Cold Brew Coffee!

I'll be honest: When the "Cold Brew" craze hit, I was skeptical. But then I tried it, and I fell in love.

We are so proud to introduce our own Cold Brew Coffee, which is my favorite, if I do say so myself. It's steeped fresh daily for 20 hours, which gives it its bold flavor without acidity.

The next time you're looking for a 3pm boost, I definitely recommend a cup of our cold brew, paired with freshly baked cookie! Try this combo today!

Happy First Day of Spring!

I don't know why, but it seems like Spring Fever has hit us hard here in Southwick. Maybe it's all the warmer weather lately, but we are psyched for Spring.....Like, "this calls for a celebration!" kind of psyched.

The next time you're out and about in our lovely community, stop by our place and celebrate Spring with us with your first milkshake of the season!

Our milkshakes and sundaes are made only with the gourmet, homemade ice cream from our local dairy, Gran-Val Scoop. This way, you get good products and we can support our local businesses!

Heat Wave in February

Say it with me now: "SPRING FEVER"!

This beautifully mild weather has me wishing for Spring, and according to the 10-day forecast on Weather.com, it's going to stay in the 50s until next week! And even then, it looks like mid-forties! *YAY!*

To celebrate this heat wave in February, stop by our Cafe & Deli and get an early start on your ice cream intake for the year! We stock gourmet, homemade ice cream from our favorite local dairy, Gran-Val Scoop, and now is your chance to get your party sundae on! We think 50* in February in MA is a good reason to celebrate...don't you? ;)

Our Matcha Tea Lattes

We are now offering Matcha Tea Lattes! Ok, so now....what is Matcha?

According to this article on Huffington Post, matcha is green tea leaves that have been stone-ground into a fine powder. When you make a cup of matcha, you're not just infusing the water with the essence of the tea, but you're actually able to ingest the tea leaves themselves! This means that you could be getting an added boost of all the antioxidant and virus-fighting goodness when you drink matcha!

The article also says that there is no scientific evidence that suggests that drinking matcha is any more beneficial than drinking green tea. But, drinking green tea of any kind will surely put you on track to "healthy".

The article cautions that matcha tea lattes could be full of sugar and calories, and while ours definitely has its share of dairy and sugar, it sure is a nice treat every once in a while.

So drink your matcha for your health, but then treat yourself as well with one of our matcha tea lattes, now that you know what it is...

Thoughtfulness Counts

I love writing notes and sending them to friends with small gifts just because. Most people are inundated with spam in their email and it's rare to find something especially handwritten in your mailbox. It's a chance to brighten someone's day and make them feel special.

The next time you are thinking about a friend, write them a quick note, and include a piece of your latest raid of the Target $1 section or include a $5 gift card from our Cafe. They will feel loved and appreciated, and who knows? Maybe it will come to them at a point when they needed it the most!

Holiday Catering!

The holidays are here, and that means gathering with your friends and family. But as Julia Child said, "A party without cake [or food of any kind, we think] is just a meeting."

Turn the fun up on your next family get-together without the fuss! Ask us about our catering services! We are very proud to be offering a 5 FOOT GRINDER for parties, too!

Happy Holidays from all of us at Fresh Fields!

PB and J; Mulled Cider and Thanksgiving

Let's face it: Mulled Cider & Thanksgiving go together like Peanut Butter & Jelly. Add this easy mulled cider recipe from Bobby Flay to your Thanksgiving dinner menu and your friends and family will thank you! (Plus, it's so easy, you can impress them without any extra fuss!)

Mulled Cider

2 quarts apple cider
2 cinnamon sticks
2 whole allspice berries
2 whole cloves
1 orange, thinly sliced

Place all ingredients in a large saucepan and bring to a simmer on the grates of a grill or over a burner. Divide among individual mugs and serve hot.

While you're prepping your Thanksgiving feast, save the "mullings" til later and treat yourself to a hot cider now! Our Cafe is serving Apple Cider, hot or iced, for a limited time!

Enjoy your holiday and enjoy being thankful!

New Loyalty Program

Since we are a small business, we recognize the importance of loyalty--loyalty to our customers and their loyalties to us. We are grateful for all of you, because, without you, none of this is possible.

All of this is why we are introducing a new loyalty program, on top of the Coffee Lover's Club program we currently run. Earn free stuff after your purchases and even get a treat in the month of your birthday! Ask us about it on your next visit. We will continue to improve this program as we move forward and we look forward to seeing again very soon!

Thank you for your support!

Product Spotlight: Mrs. Murphy's Donuts

I don't know about you, but when Fall comes 'round, I start getting a bit lazy when it comes to healthy eating. Maybe it's the shorter days; or maybe it's the cooler weather that makes me scrounge for the nearest comfort foods; whatever the reason, I am trying my best to be good this year.

My one vice, however, seems to be donuts. And none worse than those baked-fresh-daily-delights from Mrs. Murphy's. Their Apple Spice and Pumpkin Donuts are back in season and in stock in our Cafe! So the next time you're looking for a sweet treat, stop by and pick up one of Southwick's treasures right here!

A Pitstop on Your Way to the Big E

We New Englanders know what time of year it is....Fall, you say? Oh no; it's Big E season! Food, fun, the Avenue of States...did I mention food?

When you're on your way to the Big E this year, stop by our store to gear up and prep for a long day. Fuel up your car, pick up some bottled waters, or even some coffee to get you ready for the day ahead.

Enjoy your fun, then stop on your way back home to tell us all about the fun you had at New England's favorite fair!

Summer Hangs On with our Sweet Tea

We're happy that Fall is on the way, but we love all of the seasons that make New England so great! That's why we're not quite ready to let go of flip flop season just yet while we celebrate our iced teas!

Our iced tea is made with a special blend concocted by the tea experts over at Harney & Sons Fine Teas. They take pride in making great tea and we take pride in the ability to serve it to you! Add your favorite flavor and you can make Summer's drink your own!

Pumpkin Spice & Everything Nice

If someone asked me what my favorite part about living in New England is, I would probably say, "Fall"...hands down. I love the crisp, cool air. I like cozy campfires, s'mores, and crunchy leaves. OH, and I can't forget how much I love my Pumpkin Spice Lattes.

I know a lot you out there are not quite ready for Autumn, and I can't say I blame you. There's no need to rush the seasons along...but I am kind of psyched that Pumpkin Spice coffees and lattes are back in our cafe!

So I'm fine staying in my shorts and tank tops for a little while longer...but only while I can sip on the drink that is the epitome of Fall!

All other PSL lovers, come join me! And if you've never had one and you're wondering what all the fuss is about...try one! :)

On-the-Go Sandwiches While You're On-the-Go

We're all busy. Sometimes, that means eating on the run, which also means eating junk because it's convenient.

Save yourself from the junk food and stop into The Notch Travel Centre! We sell our freshly made deli sandwiches in an open cooler right by the registers! Grab a water, a sandwich, and an apple, and your lunch just went from yuck to yum!

Iced Tea & Summer

When someone says, "Summer", I think of driving in the car with the windows down, music turned up, and a cup holder full of iced tea. If you're a Summer-lovin' peep like me, then get your car, turn the windows down and the music up and visit our Cafe for a big cup of our iced tea!

Our iced tea comes from Harney & Sons Teas, based out of NY. Their passion for tea surely overflows into the wonderful flavors of, not only their assorted hot teas, but also their iced teas. The iced orange pekoe blend that we serve in our Cafe is sure to satisfy and to make your Summer complete.

Get a cup and put your own twist on it by adding a Raspberry or Peach flavor shot to it!

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner

The saying goes, "Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner". But we say, this week, you can have chicken for dinner or lunch, because our special this week is our 3 Piece Chicken Tenders!

Yummy chicken with a savory crunch is just what the doctor ordered for this week! Pick your dressing or seasoning, and even add on a side of our tasty waffle fries! That combo is pretty close to my definition of "comfort food"...

Visit us this week for your share of the special...they won't be here long!

Ice Cream Sundae: The Cure for the Heat

This heat wave sure is giving us a run for our money. If you ask us, the only cure for a heat wave like this one is an ice cold milkshake or sundae.

Of course the only kind of ice cream that will do is homemade, gourmet ice cream from a local dairy right here in Western MA: Gran-Val Scoop!

We are honored to be carrying their delicious dairy concoctions and we want to share them with you! So beat the heat this week by visiting us in our Cafe and getting an ice cream sundae!

Espresso: Italian Luxury

What is it about Italy that makes all things Italian luxurious? Think about it: Italian cars driven with Italian shoes made with Italian leather while drinking (and here's the epitome of luxury...) Italian espresso. That word picture brings me back to the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun" when she visits her Italian paramour in beautiful Positano...sounds like paradise.

While we may not be able to provide you with cars, shoes, or leather of any kind (let alone those of Italian import), we can SURELY provide the picture of luxury with our Italian Lavazza espresso, made with our Italian Faema espresso machine!

Just add a shot of Lavazza espresso to your iced coffee for an extra boost or try one of our iced lattes! Either way, get your little taste of Italian indulgence right here in our Cafe!

Product Spotlight: Our Coffee!

As a small, family-owned business, we have a soft spot for other local, small businesses. When we can, we try to do our part to keep it in the "local family". This is why, when we started on our cafe venture, we searched for a local roaster with the right knowledge and the passion for coffee. Cue: Good as Gold Coffee Roasters from Worcester, MA.

All of our drip coffee (hot and iced, but not espresso) comes from their roastery in Worcester. They worked tirelessly with us at the outset to get just the right flavor that we wanted for our customers.

So the next time that you're enjoying a cup of joe, made specially for you in our cafe, remember: you're helping to support some local businesses who value their customers and product quality!

An Embarrassing Story from One Fourth of July...

Funny and embarrassing story about one of the first Fourth of Julys I spent with my husband and his family: We were enjoying some time on a beautiful lake, with beautiful weather. It was the kind of weather that we dream about for summer: cloudless, sunny, breezy, and warm. I'm VERY fair-skinned....like, if I step outside for more than an hour without sunscreen, I'm toasted...for real. On this particularly sunny and breezy day, I decided to forego the sunscreen option in the morning to get a "good base". This is a decision that I later regretted when, upon getting off of the boat, my mother-in-law lovingly looked at me and asked, "Is your forehead swollen?" In the shiny chrome reflection, I saw that my forehead had, indeed, swelled.

Horrified, I spent the rest of the night putting ice to my face, praying that it wasn't really as bad as it seemed. After all, I had to return to work and meet with clients! To my dismay, it only got worse, as the swelling dropped further down my face and swelling my eyes. Of course, this made me look like a car accident victim whose forehead was now leathery and flaky...good look, I assure you.

So, what is the moral of this story, my friends?? Have fun this weekend, but bring LOTS of sunblock and a hat.

And if you're having a party outside, let us cater it, so that you all you have to worry about is basking in the sun.....but only if you're wearing a hat. ;) Call us at 413-569-2007

Grill the Best Burger This Summer & The Milkshake to Chase It

I love me some good ol' fashioned grillin'. That's what Summer means to me: friends, fun, sunshine, and grilled food. And nobody knows grilled food like Bobby Flay. So, when I want to prepare a grilled food meal, he's my first checkpoint. Use his recipe for the Perfect Burger to wow your friends and family with your foodie prowess!

Ingredients
1.5 lbs ground chuck (80%) or ground turkey (90%)
kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
1.5 Tbs canola oil
4 slices cheese (optional)
4 hamburger buns, split; toasted, if desired.

Directions
Heat a gas grill to high or heat coals in a charcoal grill until they glow bright orange and ash over. Brush the burger with the oil. Grill the burgers until golden brown and slightly charred on the first side, about 3 minutes for beef and 5 minutes for turkey. Flip over the burgers. Cook beef burgers until golden brown and slightly charred on the second side, 4 minutes for medium rare (3 minutes if topping with cheese; see step 3) or until cooked to desired degree of doneness. Cook turkey burgers until cooked throughout, about 5 minutes on the second side.

Read more on the Food Network website.

Of course the best thing to pair with your perfectly cooked burger, other than fries anyway, is a well-prepared milkshake! And we've got the best milkshakes in town, thanks to the homemade ice cream from Gran-Val Scoop Ice Cream. So once you've worked really hard grilling, let us treat you to an icy cold, creamy shake! We're open until 11PM!

Some Cheap Date Ideas for Warmer Weather

Let's face it: Date nights are fun, but they can be expensive. There's gotta be a better way, right??

Good news, friends! Our buds over at Glamour have compiled a list of cheap date ideas for the warmer weather! Here are a few:

Outdoor Movie-Stop by a drive-in theater or check out some local parks or shopping plazas that might feature some outdoor movie showings.

Game Night-Sweep the dust off of some of those old board games and reminisce about your childhood while playing Sorry! or Clue.

Picnic-Grab some of your favorite snacks (or your favorite sandwiches from your all-time favorite sandwich shop...), your favorite drinks, and enjoy the weather and the company. Leave all tech in the car--no phones allowed! ;)

For even more ideas, visit the Glamour website.

Let us know if you try any of these awesome ideas...And if you do want to bring some of our sandwiches along, make sure to call ahead at 413.569.2007! This way, you don't have to wait to get your picnic started!

#nofilter? More Like #nofiller!

Instagram is my second favorite app (Pinterest is my all-time fave...), and I love it when I see friends take some great pictures and then add #nofllter. I guess I like the authenticity and honesty of the images they share. I like knowing that I'm not getting the wool pulled over my eyes (so to speak).

Authenticity and honesty is why we serve Boar's Head Deli Meats here. Instead of #nofilter, just go ahead and put #nofiller by our sandwiches. We don't want to pull the proverbial wool over your eyes by serving you a trumped up version of deli meat that only pretends to be real. Just real meat and no fillers.

Pit Stop!

My husband has a motorcycle and we love it! We like to ride up into Granville, MA and over into East Hartland, CT. The back roads of these towns are stunningly beautiful, and with the weather so nice lately, it's the perfect time of year to take advantage of the scenery.

Of course, in all of our excitement to get on the road, we can forget to take snacks. So after a ride, we're usually ready to eat. In those times, it's nice to know that we can get a healthy meal at Fresh Fields! Yummy sandwiches with Boar's Head Deli Meats and fresh veggies, savory salads, and coffee...it's a smorgasbord of deliciousness!

So while you're out traveling and enjoying the beautiful weather that has finally arrived in our fair part of the country, stop here and get refreshed! Don't let hunger stand in the way of your travels or your health goals!

The Perfect Centerpiece for a Catered Spring Party

The weather is just right for a party with friends. Fill a tub with some ice and drinks, grab some yummy apps and don't forget the centerpiece to tie your decorations together...oh, you don't have one yet? NO PROBLEM!

The super helpful folks at Real Simple have just the thing to solve your party decorating probs. Make a Floral Table Runner with these simple steps and have your friends calling you the "Hostess with the Mostess"! Of course, I think I might just make one for our kitchen table anyway...I mean, just in case one of our friends stops by...(It's so pretty!)

If you are entertaining a crowd in this fine weather, don't forget that we can cater for you! Our sandwiches, salads, coffees, and pastries can be just the ticket for a party well-executed! Call us!

Salad: It's What's for Lunch

Are you tired of the same old sandwich for lunch, with the same old chips you always eat, and the same old everything for lunch?

We think lunch should be exciting, which is why we offer fun salads to break up the midday monotony. We have our garden-variety Garden Salad, but we also have our Asian Salad with Mandarin oranges and sesame seed dressing. Our Harvest Salad is a favorite, too, with apples, apple cider vinaigrette and a sweet fruit and nut mix! Our menu has a full list of our offerings.

So the next time you go to grab your PB&J, but you want something a little different, try one of our salads!

Serving Gran-Val Scoop Ice Cream!

Do you like ice cream? Do you like HOMEMADE ice cream? If you answered with resounding "yes's" like me, then have we got a treat for you!

We are now proudly serving Gran-Val Scoop ice cream in our cafe! Cups, cones, sundaes, milkshakes, and floats...the possibilities are endless!

We are so happy to be partnering with our Granville, MA neighbors and fellow small business owners. Like us, they want to provide the families that visit their establishment quality products and safe family time.

So visit them to satisfy your sweet tooth and visit the animals. But if you're a little short on time, visit us to get the same yummy treats!

Spring Has Finally Arrived!

Well, it appears that Spring has FINALLY graced us with her presence. Seeing as she took her sweet time, we're ready to celebrate in style!

Our macaroni and potato salads are back, and egg salad will make the occasional appearance starting this month too!

Product Spotlight: Mac 'n Cheese

Okay, let’s play a quick game of word association. When I say, “comfort food”, what comes to mind? Is it Mac ‘n Cheese?

Now introducing our take on the epitome of the food of comfort: Mac ‘n Cheese! Cheesy and creamy, our Mac ‘n Cheese is the perfect side dish for one of our savory deli sandwiches.

We are so excited about this new addition that we are going to keep it around for a little while. So, the next time you stop in to pick up your go-to sandwich, try it with a side of good ole comfort food!

Happy Noms,

Heidi

Why "Afternoon Tea"?

Have you ever wondered where the British tradition of “Afternoon Tea” originated? That’s funny…me too!

According to AfternoonTea.co.uk, Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, started the afternoon tea tradition in the early 19th century. She would feel faint in between meals in the afternoon and would have bread and tea sent to her rooms privately. Her friends began to join her, and before long, tea in the afternoon became a fashionable thing to do. The article also stated that, in today’s Great Britain, Afternoon Tea is a bit of a luxury.

Afternoon Tea might be a luxury nowadays in England, but that hasn’t stopped them from drinking tea in general…and I don’t see why it should stop us either! We have some of the best selections of teas from the masters at Harney & Sons Fine Teas—green, black, and oolong. We even have some organic offerings!

So get in touch with your inner duchess and drink some tea (even if it is 10am…)!

All Endings Are New Beginnings!

Okay...I have some news, but I will only tell you if you promise not to bring out your torches and pitchforks…

Since September has arrived and school has started, it’s beginning to look a lot like Fall. And while you may not be willing to give up your tank tops and flip flops just yet, I think at least a few of you will be happy to hear that we’ve brought back our Pumpkin Spice coffees and lattes!

We feel like right now is the time to experience the best of both seasons...have your Pumpkin Spice Latte AND wear your flip flops! Or drink your Pumpkin Spice Coffee on ice!

Trust me, friends...the sweet taste of cinnamony pumpkin can help ease the loss of Summer. So embrace Fall with both arms (or one, because one hand has your coffee…)! Visit us today!

Yummy, Different Things to Put on Your Grill!

The height of summer means iced tea, yard games, and BBQ! And sure, we all love hamburgers and hot dogs…but what else can be made sweet on the grill?

I recently found an article listing “18 Things You Didn’t Know You Could Grill”, and I was super surprised! Take a look at just some of the mouth-watering ideas this writer had:

·         Grilled Peaches & Cinnamon

·         Grilled Caesar Salad

·         Grilled Watermelon

·         Grilled Pound Cake

Check out the article for even more tasty ideas for your backyard grill! They’re great ways to impress your friends at your next party.

Even better, have us cater your next backyard get-together and make your life that much easier! For salads and slaws, give us at least a couple of days to plan; for sandwiches, we only 24 hours’ notice! Give us a call at 413-569-2007!

Apparently Your Afternoon Pick-Me-Up CAN Get Better!

If we’re all being honest, it feels like our mid-afternoon coffee break is the only thing that gets us through the rest of the day sometimes. That piping hot, aromatic liquid in a cup wrapped in my own two hands is sweet, sweet comfort and the perfect boost to end the day on the right note.

I know it is hard to imagine how this time of day could possibly get any better, but according to the writers at POPSUGAR, it can. They recently posted an article titled, “12 Ways to Make Your Coffee Break Better”. I have to admit that I was skeptical at first, but they presented some ideas that I will definitely be trying on my next caffeinated hiatus, including:

·         Be Smart! They recommend listening to a podcast or learning a new language, even playing a brain game…anything to keep your brain active and healthy.

·         Read a Book! They also suggest tackling that personal reading list that you’ve meaning to conquer.

·         Network! You know, it’s not such a bad thing to get to know your neighbor in the cubicle next to you…after all, you have at least eight hours per day in common!

If you want to know more of their pretty great ideas, visit the article on their website. And the next time you take your coffee break, we’d be honored if you took us along! Our coffee is fresh every day, so it’s ready for anything: breaking the ice with a coworker or even comforting you when you relate to the main character of that book you’re reading maybe a little too much… (No judging; we’ve all been there…)!

See you around the cup,

Heidi :)

Make-Ahead Breakfasts? Yes, Please!

I am quite simply not a morning person. You know those “Instant Human: Just Add Coffee” mugs and t-shirts…those were created for people just like me…my non-morning people. As such, you can imagine that functioning well enough to get myself out the door in one piece is task enough, let alone having to cook for myself. So naturally, I was intrigued by a post from a favorite blogger of mine listing “17 Make-Ahead Breakfasts for Busy Mornings”.

The like-minded writer posts links to recipes for:

Oatmeal Raisin Breakfast Cookies

Chia Seed Oatmeal

Breakfast Quiche &

Chocolate Coconut Granola, plus more!

Friend, if you’re like me, you must check out these recipes to help set you up for a successful morning. But in the event that not even those treats are a possibility, our folks at the Café and Deli will be thrilled to serve you! We open at 4am, so while it’s not likely we will see you at that hour, anytime you choose to visit is a good time for us!

See you soon,

Heidi :)

Coffee or Tea: What Will It Be?

It’s the age-old question: “Coffee or Tea?” and we’re still not sure where we stand. All we know is that they’re both delicious and now, we have a better selection of coffees and teas than ever before!

Our House Roast is a new, lighter, but still flavorful coffee that is sure to satisfy your morning caffeine craving. Bonus: Ask us for a free Coffee Lover’s Club card on your next visit, and start getting every 6th cup of coffee for FREE!

For our tea lovers out there, we are now proudly serving Harney & Sons Fine Teas.  These teas are tasty additions to our menu, with a selection that includes decaffeinated teas and organic teas. We are also offering some of their teas in the Harney & Sons specialty tins for you to take home or to gift!

So whether you’re a coffee drinker, a tea drinker, or you’re just plain indecisive, we can help…and we can sympathize! ;)

See you soon around the mug,

Heidi

The Notch Travel Centre & Fresh Fields Cafe Win Award

The Notch Travel Centre is proud to announce that their store was awarded with the “Store Operator of the Year Award” in Food Service for 2014. The New England Convenience Store Association (NECSA) will present the award to the owners of The Notch Travel Centre, Craig and Diane Samuelsen, on the evening of March 18, 2014 at their Annual Awards Dinner. NECSA’s Annual Awards Dinner is part of their Annual Trade Show, which occurs on May 19, 2014 at the DCU Center in Worcester, MA.

The Notch was selected by NECSA’s knowledgeable and elite group of judges out of the many convenience stores in New England. The judging panel included members of the NECSA’s Board of Directors, as well as other members of the association that have taken influential strides for the industry in the Northeast.

“We are very humbled and honored to be selected as the recipient of this award,” stated Craig Samuelsen, Owner and Operator of The Notch Travel Centre. “Since our opening just over a decade ago, we have always strived to make our place comfortable, inviting, and unique from a typical convenience store experience. We have accomplished this task through our Fresh Fields Café & Deli, and also largely through the dedication and friendly nature of our staff.”

In order to find more information about NECSA, visit their website at www.necsa.net.

The Notch Travel Centre is located at 326 College Highway in Southwick, MA, just 3 miles from the Massachusetts and Connecticut state border. A Shell fuel dealer, they also sell Shell gasoline and diesel fuels, as well as provide a comprehensive selection of items in their convenience store and café/deli, known as Fresh Fields Café & Deli.

Product Spotlight: Yogurt Parfaits

I’ll be honest…when I was growing up, I didn’t like yogurt very much. Thankfully, “with age comes wisdom”…and better taste (we hope). I’ve learned to like yogurt, not only because of flavor, but because I know it’s good for me. Don’t ask me how or why it is good for me; I’m still not sure what the benefits are, even after I read this article on WebMD. All I know is that it’s good for me, so I should eat it.

Lucky for all of you out there who are like me, we have a delicious way to eat yogurt that is sure to satisfy. Our yogurt parfaits are served with organic, low fat vanilla yogurt, crunchy granola, and a sweetened fruit and nut mix. It’s a recipe for delicious, healthy eating!

So the next time you’re looking for something healthy, come on by and discover yogurt all over again!

Budget-Friendly Valentine's Day Dates

If time and money were not factors, I think we all could find amazing and romantic ways to sweep our loved ones off of their feet. But since most of us are living on tight budgets and time is short, planning new and inventive dates on Valentine’s Day that don’t break the bank can feel like a real challenge.

In my own quest for the ultimate affordable, yet spell-binding date idea, I came across this article that lists some great cheap date ideas for Valentine’s Day and for any other date for that matter. Here are just some of the ideas:

-Dine in instead of in a restaurant.

-Splurge on dessert (my fave…).

-Entertain for less: find performances and exhibits that are free or are budget-friendly, such as at museums, libraries, or parks (unless it’s cold…in that case, stick to museums and libraries…)

Be sure to check out the article for other great ideas to capture the heart of your significant other AND keep your budget happy.

From all of us at Fresh Fields Café,

Happy Valentine’s Day!

More Caffeine? Espresso or Drip Coffee?

I like drip coffee, but I’m an espresso drinker too. For those of you out there with similar affinities for drinks of the caffeinated variety, have you ever wondered about the type of coffee from which you get the most caffeine?

For some unknown reason, I always thought that espresso contained more caffeine than drip coffee, but I never knew for sure. Imagine my surprise when I discovered the opposite! An article on Wikipedia (for better or for worse…) states, “Espresso has more caffeine per unit volume than most beverages, but the usual serving size is smaller—a typical 60 mL (2 US fluid ounces) of espresso has 80 to 150 mg of caffeine, a little less than the 95 to 200 mg of a standard 240 mL (8 US fluid ounces) cup of drip-brewed coffee.” So, an espresso shot still packs quite a punch for it’s small size, even if it’s caffeine content isn’t quite as large as it’s drippy cousin.

I’m not sure how this will affect my decisions when it comes to my morning and afternoon cups of “pick-me-up”, but I’m grateful for such a delicious way to get through the day!

The next time you’re in our Café, try switching it up a bit…if you’re a drip coffee drinker, try one of our espresso drinks! And if you’re an espresso aficionado, try a drink with a little more punch…IF YOU DARE! ;)

See you in the Café soon,

Heidi

Curiosity about these apples got the best of me (you know, it being Fall and all…), so I decided to look it up. Pumpkin Spice Lattes & Pumpkin Whoopie Pies

pumpkin recipeThere is not much that I don’t like about the Fall, which is why I want to share this delicious recipe for Pumpkin Whoopie Pies from DreamyDesserts.blogspot.com. Note: I substituted granulated sugar for Splenda and it came out just fine.

Pumpkin Whoopie Pies with Cream Cheese Filling

Makes 12-14

3 cups AP Flour

1 Tablespoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon ground ginger

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

¼ teaspoon ground cloves

1 cup brown sugar

1 cup Splenda (use could white sugar if you like)

1 cup vegetable oil

1 - 15 oz. can of pumpkin

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Beat together brown sugar, Splenda, oil and pumpkin. Add eggs one at time, mixing well after each addition, followed by the vanilla. In a separate bowl, shift together the dry ingredients. Slowly incorporate the dry ingredients into the wet until just combined.

Using a pastry bag with a round tip, or a big zip top plastic bag with one corner snipped, squeeze out concentric circles of batter, starting from the middle and working outward until the circles are about 2 inches in diameter. Bake for 11 minutes and cool on a rack.

Cream Cheese Filling

1 - 8 oz. package of cream cheese, softened

1 stick of unsalted butter, room temperature

1 - 16 oz. package of powdered sugar

about a capful of vanilla extract

a pinch of cinnamon (to taste)

Beat together cream cheese and butter. Add powdered sugar, vanilla and cinnamon. Frost flat side of half the pies and top with another piece.

Enjoy right away or chill overnight.
